Science of Cosmic Sound
These sacred sounds with limited potency were attained by the rishis/sadhus through rigorous penance, after doing immense spiritual practice. The sages were sitting in deep meditation/meditation for long periods of time, when they suddenly received sounds known to them as divine sources. Cosmic sounds are therefore not a creation of the human mind. They have been received from the creator of the universe himself.
The rishis are therefore known as kazmic sound seers – dhvani/seers of sound. They have experienced, experimented and expanded the vast applications of this science.
This science is based on the all-pervading power of the eternal sound/sound of the universe.
Sanatana Dharma (Eternal Vedic Dharam) – was self revealed to the sages. Vedas were not written by man; It was received by the sages in the transcendental state. In Islam, it is said that the Qur’an was revealed by Allah, meaning that whoever received the Qur’an attained a very high yogic state. In the same way, Christians speak of the Bible as the ultimate scripture. The Vedic sage Thomas Ashley-Farrand, who was instrumental in bringing the knowledge of Sanskrit cosmic sound to the West, states: “In addition to mental, emotional and physical reactions, our subtle energy body also responds to the vibrations of sound. As sacred sound vibrations, cosmic sounds work at all these levels and therefore can bring about change at all levels. Each word or sound in Cosmic Sound has a very specific energetic effect.” Cosmic Sound chanting has a profound and beneficial effect on our mental, emotional, physical and spiritual states. This chant has the power to transform all humanity; including relationships, health, happiness, career, finance and success; to name a few.
At the energetic level, our etheric/spiritual body, including our chakras and nadis (energy centers and channels) and also the aura (subtle body) respond to the vibrations of cosmic sound. Viewers report that they can actually observe the petals of the chakras (which look like lotus flowers) opening and shining while chanting some cosmic sound. Each chakra has its own cosmic sound known as its prana/shakti/energy (Prana or Chi) and heals the respective parts. The Mukha/Mouth is described in Ayurveda as the seat of the Agni Chakra – the subtle center for the generation of metabolic forces and thermal energy. At the gross level, the Agni Chakra of the mouth performs the initial stage of the digestive system; at the subtle level, it produces ‘sound’. At the subtle level, it also generates divine flow of ‘Sound’ currents in the individual consciousness. The entrance to the mouth is also considered a ‘living fire pit’; Because it is the ability to express many expressions of sound. The words spoken can lead to an affectionate relationship or hatred—reflecting the fact that words are not only carriers of information, but they also maintain and express the speaker’s feelings. The speaker’s streams of consciousness are endowed with the vibrations of sound produced by the utterance of words in his speech flow. These produce a conscious-effect on the destination with which the associated sound waves collide. While acoustic effects can be studied by physical means; Conscious-effects’, being unmanifest and unconscious in nature, can only be realized and analyzed through spiritual practices/sadhanas.
The ‘Law of Attraction’ echoes this principle. Feelings, thoughts – all these vibrations reach the universe and accordingly manifest as experiences in our lives. The whole universe is like an ocean of electromagnetic and animate energy vibrations. Good or bad thoughts generated by a person’s mind affect thought fields by attracting thought vibrations of compatible quality and repelling those of opposite quality. Thought vibrations create their own field of attraction which connects the expansion of corresponding (good or bad) currents of thoughts in the cosmic domain. Similarly, the effect of vibrations of consciousness is generated by different types of emotions. The vibrations of a person’s thoughts or feelings are strengthened by them during their cosmic journey in the following (corresponding) regions. And, due to the periodic nature of the motion of waves, they eventually reach back to their origin. The completion of each such cycle increases the intensity of the respective good or bad effects.
The subtle vibrations generated by chanting the Cosmic Sound are often more powerful and faster than human thought waves. If the Cosmic Sound is chanted continuously, in a consistent cyclical manner – these supersonic vibrations help in creating a calm and divine atmosphere within the individual. These vibrations have a strong field of attraction to deflect other waves of negative thoughts and emotions that may collide with them. Continuous chanting of cosmic sound has a dual effect: externally, it creates vibrations in the surrounding space and internally, it stimulates additional energy centers and subtle endocrine glands inside the body.
Laboratory experiments have demonstrated the power of sound in the medical lab; which can enable a small cork to push an iron rod. Science today has advanced to remote control of space-crafts by electromagnetic vibrations/waves and delicate surgery to cut heavy metals by lasers. These scientific advances clearly show that it is not the instrument that does the work, but it is the ‘power’ of the vibrations that induce such wonderful effects. The supernatural effects of the transcendental vibrations generated by the chanting of mantras are more remarkable and beyond the reach of any progress. In the context of modern (physically based) science or acoustics, sound is produced by vibrations produced in any physical medium. Modern psychologists have gone a step further by acknowledging the latent power of the voice that affects the brains of the speaker and the listeners (e.g. the effects of a harsh or affectionate voice of the same frequencies and intensity are very different). These are only crude and limited forms of the power of sound. The dimension of sound extends far beyond the physical, psychological and inner emotional levels. They include the sublime realms of consciousness and hence the subject comes under spirituality.
Japa yoga aims at harnessing the physical as well as the spiritual power of sound with the help of specific sound patterns of mantras. The subtle energy vibrations generated by the chanting of a cosmic sound reach the specific cosmic center (associated with the deity of the cosmic sound) and attract transcendental streams of cosmic consciousness in proportionate amounts. It is well known that the combined magnetic effects of similar atoms (particles) give rise to their dense accumulations. This clustering eventually results in a mine, which becomes enriched by increasing strength of attraction by continually increasing its stock of similar atoms (particles). Correspondingly, the sphere of influence of the subtle sound vibrations generated by the chanting of the Cosmic Sound expands and with the increase in the number of persons of similar spiritual levels, these vibrations become more powerful when chanting in groups.
